Sexually Transmitted Infections

What are STIs?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as venereal diseases, are infections that get passed from one person to another through sexual contact. There are more than 20 different types of STIs, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Genital herpes
  • Human papillomaviruses (HPV)
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis B & C
  • HIV
  • Trichomoniasis

STIs affect people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and income levels. In the U.S. alone, there are about 20 million new cases every year.

Many common STIs don’t have symptoms until later in the disease and are often discovered during routine exams. This is one of the reasons it is so very important to have regular checkups.
